Audio tags are the thing nobody tells you about

Tags go inline in your script, in lowercase brackets, and they are never spoken aloud. They direct the read instead. Excited. Whispers. Laughs. Sighs. Curious. Nervous.

The builder places them for you and explains the rules most people get wrong: a tag affects what comes after it, two or three across a passage works while one per line does not, and tag response varies by voice so you test yours before committing to a long read.

Design a voice instead of settling for a preset

You can describe a voice in plain language and get it built — age, accent, timbre, personality, delivery. The builder writes that description properly, because the rules are specific: describe the voice and not the script, keep it within the length window, and name age, accent and timbre because those carry the most weight.

Worth knowing: ElevenLabs Default voices expire at the end of 2026. Designing and saving your own is no longer optional if you want consistency across a series.

Pick the right model, not just the newest

• Eleven v3 — most expressive, audio tags, multi-speaker, 70+ languages. Not real-time, and caps around 5,000 characters per request.
• Multilingual v2 — still preferred by many for steady neutral narration across audiobooks and courses.
• Flash v2.5 — very low latency for real-time and agent use.

Also worth knowing: Professional Voice Clones are not yet fully optimised for v3, so test before you commit a project to one.

Straight about consent and rights

Never clone a voice without the owner's explicit permission. Commercial use depends on your ElevenLabs plan tier — verify before selling work made with it. Some platforms and regions require disclosure of synthetic voice. And for high-stakes brand work, a human voice actor is often still the right call. Any tool that does not tell you that is selling you something.
