How to write a book cover prompt
A cover has to signal its genre in a thumbnail. Readers decide in a second, so the prompt should lock in genre, one focal subject, mood and space for the title.
| Part | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Genre | Each genre has visual codes readers expect. A thriller and a romance should never look alike. |
| One focal subject | Simple subjects survive the small thumbnail on Amazon. |
| Palette and mood | Color carries genre as much as the image does. |
| Title space | Ask for clear space so your title does not cover the art. |
| Aspect ratio | Match your trim size, 2:3 for a 6 x 9 in paperback. |
Title text: AI or design app?
- For full control, generate art with no text and add the title in Canva, Affinity or Photoshop.
- Ideogram and GPT Image can render titles well. Always check spelling before you publish.
- For a paperback, you also need a back cover and a spine sized to your page count.
