AI T-Shirt Design: 10 Prompts and a Print-Ready Workflow for POD Sellers
Share
AI can design a t-shirt in seconds. Designing one that prints cleanly and sells is a different job.
Most AI shirt designs fail for the same reasons: a photo of a shirt instead of a printable graphic, a white box around the art, misspelled text, or detail so fine it disappears on fabric. This guide covers the tools, a prompt formula built for printing, 10 copy-paste t-shirt design prompts and the checks to run before you upload to Printful, Printify, Merch by Amazon or Etsy.
The best AI tools for t-shirt designs
- Ideogram: the strongest choice for text-based shirts. It spells short phrases correctly far more often than most models. Use Design style and turn Magic Prompt off.
- ChatGPT (GPT Image 2): very good with words too, and you can refine by replying, for example "same design, make the text bigger".
- Midjourney: best for detailed illustration, vintage and painterly styles. It is weak at text, so add lettering afterwards in a design tool.
- Nano Banana Pro: useful for mockups and photo-real elements rather than flat shirt graphics.
The t-shirt prompt formula
A shirt design prompt needs to describe a print file, not a picture. Use this order:
[subject or text], [art style], [color limit], [composition], isolated on a plain white background, flat t-shirt graphic, no mockup, no shirt, no shadow
Weak: cool t-shirt design with a bear
Strong: a grizzly bear standing in front of mountains and pine trees inside a circular badge, vintage outdoor screen print style, 4-color palette of forest green, rust, cream and charcoal, centered composition, isolated on a plain white background, flat t-shirt graphic, no mockup, no shirt, no shadow
The last part matters most. Without "flat t-shirt graphic, no mockup, no shirt", most models return a photo of someone wearing a shirt, which you cannot print.

Make the design print-ready
- Upscale. AI images usually export at 1 to 2 megapixels. Printful and Printify recommend around 4500 x 5400 px at 300 DPI for a standard front print.
- Remove the background and export a transparent PNG.
- Limit colors for screen printing, where every color adds cost. Direct-to-garment printing handles full color.
- Thicken thin lines. Fine detail and tiny text fade on cotton.
- Make a dark-shirt version. Black linework disappears on navy, charcoal and black shirts.
- Proofread every letter at full size. For more than four words, set the text yourself in a design tool.
Avoid takedowns
Most print-on-demand accounts that lose listings lose them over trademarks. Never prompt brand names, sports teams, characters or famous quotes. Check catchy phrases in the USPTO trademark search before you list them, and remember that each platform has its own content rules for AI-made designs.
Turn one design into a collection
One design is one listing. A small collection sells better. From a single design, make a color variant, a version for dark shirts, a version with the text removed for a sticker, and the same art on a mug or tote. Keep the style identical so the set looks deliberate.
Build shirt prompts in one click
The POD Design Prompt Builder turns subject, style, palette, niche and print method into dropdowns and writes five paste-ready outputs with the print-ready production line built in. For text-heavy shirts, add the Ideogram prompt builder. To show the finished shirt on a model, use the POD Mockup Prompt Builder.
