Veo 3 Native Audio: Writing Dialogue That Actually Syncs
Share
Every other video model makes you generate the picture first, then bolt on sound in an editor. Veo 3 generates both in the same pass.
Dialogue, sound effects, and ambient bed — timed to the visual as it's created. That's the entire reason it's worth learning to prompt properly. Treat the audio half like an afterthought and you get the same mismatched result you'd get from any other model: a mouth moving to words that land a half-second late, a room that looks quiet but sounds like a construction site.
The fix isn't complicated, but it's a real habit change: you're not writing a video prompt anymore. You're writing a screenplay.
Put dialogue in quotation marks
The single highest-leverage thing to get right. Veo reads quoted text as spoken lines and times the character's mouth and delivery to match:
Weak: A woman tells someone to leave.
Strong: A woman stands in the doorway, arms crossed. She says, "We're done here. Take your things and go."
The quotation marks aren't decoration — they're the instruction that tells the model this exact text gets spoken, not summarized into a vague gesture.
Label your audio layers explicitly
Veo 3 separates cleanly into distinct audio channels when you name them. Don't blend dialogue, sound effects, and ambience into one paragraph — give each its own labeled line:
Dialogue: A man says, "I've been waiting all morning."
SFX: A door creaks open behind him. Keys jingle.
Ambient: Distant traffic hum, a ceiling fan turning slowly.
This structure does two things: stops the model from guessing which words are narration versus speech, and gives you a reusable template you can swap pieces of instead of rewriting the whole prompt from scratch.
Describe the voice, not just the words
"A woman says X" gives Veo the line but not the delivery. Add texture the way you'd direct a voice actor:
- Tone: weary, clipped, warm, sarcastic
- Pace: rushed, deliberate, trailing off
- Register: close-mic whisper vs. projected across a room
"A woman says, in a low, weary voice, 'Of all the offices in this town, you had to walk into mine.'" gives the model far more to work with than the line alone.
Sound effects need the same specificity as dialogue
Vague SFX cues produce generic stock-sound results. "Door sound" could mean anything from a screen door to a bank vault. Name the material, the force, and the space:
Weak: SFX: door sound
Strong: SFX: heavy wooden door creaks open slowly, hinges groaning, then clicks shut. Room has hard floors, audible reverb tail.
The room description at the end matters more than people expect — Veo factors acoustic space into how the sound resolves, so a cue with no environment context tends to default to a flat, dry mix.
Structure the full prompt in order
Veo 3 responds best to prompts built in a consistent sequence rather than a run-on paragraph: subject → camera → action → dialogue → SFX → ambient → length. Keeping that order every time makes prompts easier to template and iterate on — swap one layer without rewriting the rest.
Mistakes that break sync
- Skipping quotation marks on lines meant to be spoken — the model may narrate instead of voicing them
- Overlapping too much dialogue in one clip. A tight two-person exchange works; scripting a crowd scene in one generation usually produces mush
- Forgetting the room. Audio without acoustic context defaults to a generic mix that doesn't match the visual
- Treating SFX as optional. Silence where a footstep or door click should be is one of the fastest tells that a clip is AI-generated
Build the full audiovisual prompt in minutes
Structuring six labeled layers by hand, every time, for every clip, is exactly the kind of repetitive work a template should absorb. The AI Veo 3 Video Prompt Builder turns this into 32 dropdown fields covering subject, camera, dialogue tone, SFX, and ambient bed, and generates five ready-to-paste outputs — including a dedicated dialogue-and-audio brief structured exactly the way Veo expects it.
